When I planned for trying my hands out on Windows 8 consumer preview and Visual Studio 2011 beta , I almost struck with constraint of disk space available on my machine .Also i cant upgrade my existing windows 8 as it may hamper my existing settings.May be the option i was having was to create a virtual hard disk on my secondary partition and install the CP there ,steps on creating a VHD on your existing HD and booting from that has been well explained by Scott Hanselman on this blog post. But i decided to go with a portable external disk and try direct approach of installing the ISO image over there (As mentioned in this blog post )but the problem arises when the VHD created on External Hard Disk never appeared while installing .
So the rest of the article will describe the step by step approach of installing Windows 8 on a virtual hard disk (VHD) upon a External Hard disk and allowing the system to have option to boot from that VHD.Before that make sure you have downloaded the Windows 8 Consumer Preview .
